Two weeks ago a friend recommended the tv series Prison Break to me. Before I get to the point I have to mention that tv series are coming to German television with a major delay, e.g. Heroes will be aired in autumn here.

After watching the first episodes of Prison Break I somehow noticed major similarities between the series and my current project. In Prison Break Michael Scofield plans to free his brother who sits in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Michael himself robs a bank to get into the same prison to escape with his brother from the inside. It seems that he made a perfect and sophisticated plan. But no one can escape Murphy’s lawthings will go wrong in any given situation. So Michael has to deal with lots of unexpected incidents. And even if you think nothing can go wrong from now on, it gets even worse.

It’s the same in everyday project life. In the beginning you make a plan, budget the project, hire the staff, set the release date etc. But during the project you have to deal with many unexpected issues - as part of risk managment. I read lots of books about project management and I’ve never seen a project that went by plan. During the duration of a project company politics change, priorities change, a supplier announces a delay etc. Things like this happen to Michael Scofield and he always stays cool and doesn’t panic. There always is a solution to a problem.

Not only Prison Break is entertaining, in my opinion it’s a must see for every person who has to deal with project management.

I’m not sure when the iPhone will be released here in Germany but the question is which mobile phone provider has the exclusive rights to sell the iPhone. So far it only supports EDGE and no UMTS (HSDPA). Apple justifies this with a higher consumption of electricity when using an UMTS chipset. If this is true and Apple is not going to release a UMTS version of the iPhone they have to go with German t-mobile. It’s the only mobile phone provider that has a wide spread EDGE network. E-Plus and O2 don’t support EDGE at all; vodafone only in areas with a low UMTS coverage. Although despite Apple’s motivation not to release a UMTS iPhone in the US doesn’t mean there will be no special European version. Regarding to rumors Apple is going to announce the European iPhone version tomorrow.

As expected Steve Jobs introduced the new Mac OS X Leopard at the WWDC keynote. You could read about its features in advance, so nothing really new here. Apple gets rid of the brushed metal look; Apple’s website appears in the new design now. To me the most important feature is Time Machine, a kind of version control system with a nice GUI integrated in the operating system. The other features like Spaces or the integration of computers outside the local network are important, but nothing really new. To me Leopard looks rounder - the new features seem to be useful and thoughtfully integrated within the OS. New inside features are a full 64bit implementation of the OS and the new core animation library. Of course also included are a lot of face liftings and other minor goodies. Again this shows that Apple is not only adding goodies just for the looks but for easier usability of large amounts of data, like the new desktop features. Nothing thrilling new but the best operation system made even better. Unfortunately we have to wait until October before Leopard is going to be released.

Also introduced was a new version of Safari, not only for Mac OS X but also for Microsoft’s Windows XP and Vista. Steve showed a benchmark were Safari performs much better than the Internet Explorer or even Firefox.

Last but not least, developers are allowed to write their own AJAX applications for the upcoming iPhone. All the programs can also be executed in Safari. Steve demonstrated a small AJAX application that accesses an address database via LDAP.

Actually I was hoping for one more thing, something really exciting new nobody was expecting, but unfortunately we have to wait until the next keynote.

As often in the open source world there is not just one solution to get things done. The same counts for wordpress plugins. I browsed through the wordpress plugins page to see what I might need in my weblog. I tested different plugins locally and came up with a couple that fulfill my needs. More about the plugins and their installation in my tech blog.

A week ago I ordered a vServer from strato. I wasn’t really satisfied with the performance of my strato Premium XE package hosting wordpress. The vServer is less expensive, much faster and more configurable. The downside - it’s a real server, so you have to set it up from scratch. The server was installed by strato within two business days. I described the set up procedure of the vServer and the installation of wordpress at tech.vividbreeze.com.
