I’m not sure when the iPhone will be released here in Germany but the question is which mobile phone provider has the exclusive rights to sell the iPhone. So far it only supports EDGE and no UMTS (HSDPA). Apple justifies this with a higher consumption of electricity when using an UMTS chipset. If this is true and Apple is not going to release a UMTS version of the iPhone they have to go with German t-mobile. It’s the only mobile phone provider that has a wide spread EDGE network. E-Plus and O2 don’t support EDGE at all; vodafone only in areas with a low UMTS coverage. Although despite Apple’s motivation not to release a UMTS iPhone in the US doesn’t mean there will be no special European version. Regarding to rumors Apple is going to announce the European iPhone version tomorrow.
